Introduction:
Ghost is one of those unforgettable films that blends romance, drama, comedy, and a touch of the supernatural. Directed by Jerry Zucker and starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg, it became a '90s classic and remains just as moving today.
This was my first attempt at writing a DVD review, and Ghost felt like the perfect choice — it’s one of my all-time favourites.
Tagline: True Love Never Dies.

The Special Edition DVD includes two discs:

While some special effects look dated now, they were excellent for 1990 and still hold up well.
Plot:
Despite its spooky title, Ghost is a deeply emotional love story. It follows Sam Wheat, who is tragically killed during a mugging but chooses to remain on Earth as a ghost to protect his fiancée, Molly Jenson. With the help of reluctant psychic Oda Mae Brown, Sam navigates the afterlife, uncovers betrayal by a close friend, and strives to communicate his love to Molly.
Favourite Scenes:
- The Pottery Scene – Molly working at the wheel while Unchained Melody plays is perhaps the most iconic romantic moment in film history.
- Oda Mae at the Bank – Her comic timing is brilliant as she awkwardly tries to withdraw $4 million while Sam coaches her.
- The Ending – Sam finally says, “I love you” to Molly before moving on, leaving audiences in tears.
Characters & Performances:
- Patrick Swayze (Sam Wheat) – Warm, emotional, and convincing in every way. His performance balances humour, love, and sadness perfectly.
- Demi Moore (Molly Jenson) – Her chemistry with Swayze is believable and heartfelt, and she brings real depth to Molly’s grief and love.
- Whoopi Goldberg (Oda Mae Brown) – A standout role, mixing comedy with genuine compassion. She earned every award she won for this performance.
Music:
The soundtrack, especially Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers, became timeless thanks to this film. Maurice Jarre’s original score adds depth to the emotional and suspenseful moments.
Awards & Recognition:
- Academy Awards 1991 – Won: Best Supporting Actress (Whoopi Goldberg), Best Original Screenplay. Nominated for Best Picture, Best Film Editing, and Best Score.
- Golden Globes 1991 – Won: Best Supporting Actress (Whoopi Goldberg). Nominated for Best Picture, Demi Moore, and Patrick Swayze.
- BAFTA Awards 1991 – Won: Best Supporting Actress (Whoopi Goldberg).
Film Summary:
The film masterfully blends romance, suspense, and comedy, delivering moments that are simultaneously heart-wrenching, uplifting, and genuinely funny. Ghost seamlessly shifts between tender love scenes, thrilling tension, and comedic highlights, keeping you emotionally invested throughout.
Verdict:
Ghost is more than just a romance; it’s a story about eternal love, trust, betrayal, and hope. With unforgettable performances and scenes that have stood the test of time, this film proves that true love never dies.
A must-watch classic that blends love, laughter, and loss into one unforgettable story.
