Shadow of Mordor - Middle Earth Review

Introduction:

Wow, where to start with this game? It’s just amazing — one of my all-time favourites so far. As a big Lord of the Rings fan, I couldn’t wait for its release after watching the trailers, and it did not disappoint!

Background:

The game is now quite cheap to buy and often includes all dlc's. It’s set in the Lord of the Rings universe and mixes action, adventure, and open-world exploration. While the story might not be the most complex, it’s engaging enough to keep you pushing forward through every mission.

Story & Setting:

You play as a Ranger seeking revenge, killing every orc in your path to stop the Dark Lord and his armies. Possessed by an elf wraith, you gain supernatural powers that aid your journey.
There’s a deeper backstory I won’t spoil, but the premise blends vengeance, power, and survival beautifully.
The world features two large open-world maps that unlock as the story progresses. Each map has fast-travel towers, strongholds, captains, and countless secrets waiting to be uncovered.

Gameplay Basics:

The gameplay offers a mix of main missions, side quests, and training missions to upgrade weapons and skills.

Combat is similar to the Batman Arkham games, but far more brutal — instead of knocking enemies out, you’re decapitating orcs in slow motion! You wield a sword, bow, and dagger, all upgradeable with runes and abilities for both the Ranger and the Wraith.

There’s also a stealth element using Wraith Vision, allowing you to see enemies, collectables, and traps. You can use the environment to your advantage — shoot explosive barrels, lure beasts, or silently kill enemies from a distance.

Characters:

You’ll meet a range of unique characters, including a humorous dwarf who teaches you how to ride beasts. There are two types you can mount: giant dog-like creatures and huge ogres, both incredibly helpful in battle.

The wraith himself is your constant companion, giving you powers, guidance, and a supernatural twist to the story.

Modes & Features:

The game’s most innovative feature is the Nemesis System.

Every orc has a unique name, look, voice, and personality. They remember encounters with you — even if they’ve killed you before! Orcs have different ranks, from grunts up to powerful Warchiefs, and you can gather intel on them by interrogating weaker enemies.

You can even turn orcs to your side, forming your own army of followers and sending them to fight other captains or bosses.

A great DLC feature lets you pause and spin the camera to capture cinematic shots, add filters, and share your epic moments — a brilliant addition for content creators or screenshot fans.

Graphics/Presentation:

The graphics are highly detailed and realistic, giving the world a dark, gritty atmosphere. The sound design and music immerse you in the Lord of the Rings world perfectly — from eerie whispers to thunderous battles, it all feels authentic and cinematic.

Pros & Cons:

Fantastic, brutal combat system

Unique and addictive Nemesis System

Deep character customisation and upgrades

Immersive atmosphere and sound design

Great value with DLCs included

Photo mode adds replay value

The story could have been deeper

Some side missions (like herb gathering) feel repetitive

A few training missions can be frustratingly tricky

Verdict:

I could go on and on about this game, but the best thing you can do is just go play it. If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan or love open-world action games, you will absolutely enjoy every moment. Brutal combat, memorable enemies, and endless replay value — this is a must-play.

Score9/10
